Three People Seriously Hurt In Horry County Wreck

Few details were available about a four-car collision that seriously injured three people in four vehicles.

Crews responded to the call in the area of River Oaks Drive and World Tour Boulevard. Firefighters had to extricate at least one victim from a vehicle before other emergency responders rushed them to a nearby hospital.

Car Crash Injuries

Every year, car wrecks kill or seriously injure millions of Americans. Mostly because drivers developed some bad habits during coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, the number of serious and fatal accidents has increased significantly since 2020. Common injuries that may require the Jaws of Life include:

  • Head Injuries: Most cars and trucks have advanced restraint symptoms that reduce the risk of a serious head trauma injury. However, these systems don’t eliminate that risk. Furthermore, car crash motion often causes a head injury, because the brain slams against the skull then victims’ heads move forward and backward.
  • Broken Bones: Unlike head injuries, broken bones usually aren’t potentially fatal. However, like head injuries, broken bones are usually permanent. That’s especially true if the victim breaks a bone in a shoulder, knee, elbow, or other joint. The resulting loss of motion is usually permanent.
  • Internal Bleeding: Skin minimizes surface abrasions. Internal organs have no protective skin layer. So, when these organs grind and bump against each other, they usually bleed badly. Such bleeding is hard to detect and even harder to stop.

The medical bills in a catastrophic injury case often exceed $100,000, and most health insurance companies refuse to pay them. So, a Columbia car accident attorney connects victims with doctors who charge nothing upfront for their professional services.

Evidence in Car Crash Claims

Compensation is available for medical bills and other out-of-pocket losses, as well as emotional distress and other noneconomic losses, if a Columbia personal injury attorney proves negligence, or a lack of care, by a preponderance of the evidence, or more likely than not.

The evidence in a car crash claim usually includes the police accident report, witness statements, and medical bills. This evidence may or may not be sufficient to obtain maximum compensation.

Medical bills are a good example. Frequently, these documents include information about prior medical treatments and their costs. These documents often don’t include information about the victim’s pain level and general attitude (e.g. hopeful or hopeless). They usually don’t include information about possible future medical bills. Additionally, under South Carolina law, medical bills are not presumptively reasonable.

To supplement this medical evidence, attorneys often partner with medical experts. These doctors testify about the reasonableness of the medical expenses. These doctors also testify about likely future medical bills, as well as past and future pain and suffering. Sometimes, these doctors physically examine victims. Sometimes, they review the paperwork and draw conclusions based on it.

Usually, there’s a direct connection between the amount of evidence a victim/plaintiff presents and the amount of compensation jurors award. This compensation usually includes money for economic losses, such as medical bills, and noneconomic losses, such as pain and suffering. Additional punitive damages may be available as well, in a few extreme car crash cases.
